Surely, you’ve googled something similar to “best cbd oil for dogs on amazon” or “cbd oil for dogs anxiety amazon” only to find a large variety of hemp oils. So, what gives? The online giant sells everything under the sun except for CBD?
Unfortunately, such is the case, but don’t turn that smile upside down just yet! Let me explain to you why Amazon CAN’T sell CBD and where you can find it. I’ll also include three great tips for choosing the best CBD for your furry friend.
Does Amazon Sell CBD Oil for Dogs?
Short answer is no. And not only does it not sell CBD for dogs, it also doesn’t sell CBD for people. Amazon’s strict policies forbid the selling of certain products, especially those considered to fall under the category of “drugs” which includes CBD but not hemp seed oil. However, CBD and hemp seed oil are two completely different things (more on this later).
CBD is technically legal under the Farm Bill. I say technically because every state has the right to outlaw CBD even if the growers abide by the Farm Bill. In order to avoid messy legal matters, Amazon has decided to stay out of this industry until further notice.
However, CBD is not the only product Amazon forbids or highly regulates to avoid issues. Some of these products include:
- Vehicle Tires
- Gift Cards, Gift Certificates,
The list goes on.
Amazon’s huge online presence means it’s constantly under the eye of agencies such as the FDA and DEA, so of course it needs to do what’s best for itself. Unfortunately, that means no organic CBD oil for dogs on Amazon.
So, the FDA is Cool with CBD, Right?
I wish I could say yes, but the answer is….well, kind of. In 2018, the federal government approved the Agricultural Improvement Act (AKA the Farm Bill). The bill states that hemp grown for the production of CBD products which abide by the Farm Bill will be legally acknowledged by the federal government and approved by the FDA.
So now you may be wondering which brands are approved by the FDA. The total number is a whopping (drumroll please) ONE. Sadly, only one CBD brand by the name of Epidiolex has been approved by the FDA.
This doesn’t mean a product that doesn’t have the FDA’s approval isn’t high quality, but you can begin to understand why Amazon doesn’t want to get involved in this dilemma.
No one Messes with the DEA…Not even Amazon
The DEA is responsible for classifying all substances on a rating scale they refer to as schedules. Schedule 5 being the least harmful and containing some medicinal benefits to schedule 1 being the most dangerous and having absolutely no medicinal value.
Cannabis, the plant harvested to produce marijuana and CBD, is considered a schedule 1 drug. To put things into perspective, other substances considered schedule 1 drugs include heroin, LSD, cocaine, and methamphetamines. A little dramatic on the DEA’s side if you ask me.
However, the DEA has made a “generous” exception for cannabis. In 2018, the DEA announced that CBD products containing less than 0.1% THC (compound responsible for getting you high) and the FDA’s approval can be classified as schedule 5.
As stated above, only one brand has been approved by the FDA. And even if that weren’t the case, most full-spectrum CBD tinctures for dogs and people include up to 0.3% THC. Full spectrum tinctures produce greater effects and medicinal values than isolates because they contain other cannabinoids besides CBD, one of them being THC but still nowhere near enough to get you high.
Once the FDA and DEA release their grip on CBD, only then will we begin to see Amazon stock their shelves. However, one product we do see when we search for CBD on Amazon is hemp seed oil. Hemp oil, like CBD, comes from the hemp plant but it’s not quite the same.
Is Hemp Oil the Same as CBD Oil?
CBD and hemp oil are not the same. Hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant, hence the name. The seeds contain little to no CBD. CBD comes from the stalk, flower, and leaves of the hemp plant because those are the only parts of the plant that contain CBD. Each contain their own unique benefits to help your pooch remain strong and healthy.
Hemp seed oil contains essential fatty acids such as linoleic acid (omega 6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega 3). They’re an incredible source of protein and contain other micronutrients including vitamin E, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, zinc, sodium, potassium, iron, and phosphorus. The following are ways hemp oil can benefit your dog:
- Maintains a healthy weight
- Improves fur and skin
- Increases energy
- Strengthens the immune system
CBD on the other hand, can help in a much different way. According to Leonard Leinow in his book “CBD A Patient’s Guide to Medicinal Cannabis” CBD binds to receptors in your dog’s brain to produce the following effects:
- Lessen pain and Inflammation
- Improve sleep
- Reduce anxiety and Depression
Both are excellent and can provide a better quality of life for your furry companion. However, please be aware that Amazon only sells hemp seed oil, so if you’re looking to purchase CBD, you’re going to have to shop elsewhere.
Can CBD for Humans be Used on Dogs?
You may be shocked to find out that CBD intended for humans is exactly the same as CBD for dogs. It is perfectly okay for your dog to use your CBD tincture, and if you’re a fan of cod liver oil or bacon, you can use his as well (I don’t judge). The only reason why the two products are marketed differently is because the FDA requires unique flavorings for pets.
However, one thing to keep in mind is that although humans and dogs both have an endocannabinoids system, dogs have a higher number of endocannabinoid receptors in their cerebellum and brainstem than humans.
These parts of the brain control heart rate, respiratory rate, coordination. Due to their higher quantity of receptors, dogs are more susceptible to toxicity from too much THC.
Another thing to keep in mind is that dogs have highly sensitive respiratory systems so please never try to give your dog CBD via smoking or vaping.
So now you may be wondering the question, “if I’m going to give my dog CBD intended for people, which product should I use and why?” To that question I would say, CBD Genesis Tincture and because it’s low priced and full spectrum.
Remember our conversation about how full spectrum tinctures are better than isolates? Well the same holds true when dogs consume CBD. CBD Genesis Tincture is full spectrum but contains less than 0.3% THC, making it safe for your dogs to use.
As for as the price, you get the same medicinal effects as much more expensive tinctures on the market BUT at a fraction of the price.
I’ve had the pleasure of introducing my Pitbull/German Shephard mix Macy to CBD Genesis Tincture when she developed anxiety around Fourth of July. Did she enjoy the oily taste? Nope. But did it work? Yup.
Macy is an obedient dog so dispensing the oil in her mouth wasn’t too difficult, but if you have a pup or a crazy hyper dog that won’t sit still, trying to feed her the oil with a dropper is going to be a world of fun. In that case, you’re better off investing in actual CBD dog snacks or adding the oil to her food, which we will get to in just a minute.
As for the dosage for your pooch, I highly recommend using the smallest strength (usually 100mg) and working your way up just like you would when trying to find your personal dose.
Buying the Right CBD Oil for Dogs
Okay so as promised at the beginning of this post, I’m going to give you three useful tips to look for when shopping for the best CBD oil for dogs online. The first you may have already discovered, but allow me to elaborate.
1) Full Spectrum Over Isolate: Full spectrum tinctures are superior to isolates because they produce what is called the “entourage effect.” The entourage effect is basically a more potent effect created when all the cannabinoids in a full spectrum tincture interact with your dog’s endocannabinoid system. Isolates only contain one cannabinoid, CBD, so the entourage effect is not possible.
2) Lab Results: You always want to check the product you’re viewing offers third party lab results. Verify the product doesn’t contain more than 0.3% THC because it can be harmful for you dog. When viewing the lab results you should also be able to see which other cannabinoids are in the tincture.
3) CO2 Extract: There are many ways to extract CBD from the hemp plant, but the best method is via CO2. CO2 extraction produces much higher concentrations of CBD than other forms of extraction and guarantees you’re getting the best bang for your buck.
Where do I Start?
Looking online for any product can be time consuming and a hassle. To save you some time and money I’d like to suggest two dog products, one in edible form and the other a tincture, so that you can decide which is the better choice for your furry friend.
CBDistillery Dog Tincture
CBDistillery is one of the most reputable brands on the market. Their pet tincture is full spectrum, contains less than 0.3% THC, and is CO2 extracted.
The total strength of the tincture is 600mg with each serving containing 20mg of high-quality CBD. Don’t be confused by the words “hemp supplement” at the bottom of the bottle. This is not hempseed oil. If you recall, hemp is also the plant used to extract CBD.
If your dog is not the type that feels comfortable with you opening her mouth, you can always add the CBD oil to her food or water.
Koi CBD Dog Treats Soft Chews
Koi is another top brand in the Industry. They’ve become such huge players that you can even find them at certain 711 stores. Just like the CBDistillery, their Dog Treats abide by my 3 rules for buying CBD for dogs. However, they take it one step further.
Koi’s Soft Chews contain 0% THC but still include all of the other beneficial cannabinoids. This is known as True Spectrum and is an excellent choice for your dog.
Another upside of these delicious bacon snacks is the convenience of not having to mix them with food or water or having to bust jiu jitsu moves on your dog while using the dropper.
Koi Soft Chews come in a pack of 25 treats and deliver 2mg of CBD per treat.
Remember that at the end of the day, CBD oil for humans and dogs are the same with the exception of flavor. You now have the knowledge to look for the best CBD for your beloved friend and won’t be tricked by the hempseed oil on Amazon.
