What Exactly is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the new hot product on the market everyone’s raving about. A member of the cannabis family, CBD is extracted as an oil from the industrial hemp plant. The oil is then converted into different forms of ingestion or absorption, such CBD vape juice, gummies, or topical pain creams.

Unlike the cannabinoid THC found in marijuana, CBD will not get you high, drowsy, or hungry. However, CBD will still produce a wide range of medicinal benefits.

CBD Benefits

Many people ponder the question, “Does cbd work for depression?” The answer is yes, but let’s first take a moment to understand what exactly triggers depression.

Causes of Depression

Unfortunately, many people are still under the false presumption that depression is a mental state triggered from the insufficient production of a neurotransmitter called serotonin.  Serotonin is responsible for regulating your emotions, appetite, and sleep cycle.

Pharmaceutical companies have instilled in our minds that low levels of serotonin are solely responsible for depression when in fact, there can be a wide range of culprits. The following factors may play a major role in eliciting depression:

  • Illness
  • Traumatic events
  • Chronic stress
  • Genetics
  • Isolation
  • Emotional disorders
  • Physical pain

As you probably already noticed, CBD reduces many of the possible influencers of depression. It does so by activating the TRPV1 receptors responsible for controlling essential functions of the body such as inflammation, body temperature, and the perception of pain.

CBD also increases the production of anandamide (also known as the bliss molecule) which is a direct constituent in pleasure and emotion.

If these aren’t good enough reasons to incorporate CBD into your depression treatment, here are five more that we’re sure will change your mind.

1 CBD is Non-Addictive

Unlike many harmful pharmaceutical and non-recreational drugs, CBD is extremely safe and non-addictive. The reason for this non-addictive property is due to CBD not influencing the production of dopamine.

Substances become addictive when they release a surge of dopamine in the brain; a neurotransmitter responsible for the feeling of pleasure. Over time, people become addicted to the excess production of dopamine and therefore experience withdrawal symptoms when attempting to quit.

Because CBD isn’t habit forming, you don’t have to worry about any of the negative side effects if you decide to stop consuming it.

In fact CBD has been known to regulate the levels of neurotransmitters in your brain. It works to lower certain neurotransmitters while raising others to achieve the proper balance.

Yet another reason why CBD doesn’t become an addictive compound is because it doesn’t directly bind to any receptors. As previously mentioned, CBD activates receptors but doesn’t bind to them.

It’s this constant binding of receptors that is known to create addictions from both legal and non-legal drugs.

Rather than create a harmful habit that can be difficult to quit, CBD can help you achieve well-being and proper balance by providing essential vitamins and minerals.

2 CBD Provides Nutritional Value

CBD is often referred to as a full spectrum oil. Full spectrum simply means that the CBD oil contains all the cannabinoids in the hemp plant after the extraction. When you consume full spectrum CBD oil, you’re ingesting various vitamins and minerals that may be missing from your diet.

3 You Don’t Need a Prescription to Buy CBD Oil

No prescription is required when buying cbd oil. However, we highly suggest you consult your physician before initiating any type of CBD treatment.

When purchasing CBD, vendors will not ask you for a doctor’s prescription. You can freely choose where and how much CBD you'd like to buy.

However, whether or not you are abiding by the law when possessing or consuming CBD will depend on the state you reside in. Certain states have legalized the use of the cannabis plant. Therefore, allowing you to legally consume CBD without a doctor's prescription.

Other states have strict regulations on who can consume CBD. Usually only people who suffer from certain medical conditions such as epilepsy can obtain a prescription.

Lastly, three states (South Dakota, Idaho, and Nebraska) have completely banned the use of any form of cannabis.

Bonus Tip: CBD Oil Dosage for Depression

Your proper CBD dosage will depend on multiple factors such as weight, gender, metabolism, and tolerance. However, from our personal experience, we’ve noticed that the most important constituent in determining your dose is weight.

If you decide to use CBD pills for depression, consume one 25-30mg capsule and wait 45 minutes to feel the effects. If you’ve yet to feel any relief by the end of the 45 minutes, consume an additional pill and wait another 45 minutes. Repeat this cycle until you obtain your desired effects.

The total number of capsules you consumed will be the quantity of CBD gel caps you should intake in one sitting the following day.

If you decide to use CBD oil, we’ve constructed an infographic that will give you an insight for choosing your proper strength. Because weight is the greatest influence, we’re going to use weight to help you determine the best potency for you.

If you weigh about 150 lbs, we recommend starting with a 550mg strength CBD tincture. The less you weigh, the lower the strength and vice versa. If you weight near 200 lbs, a strength of 1000mg may be right for you.

CBD dosage

Begin your consumption by following the instructions on the product. Just like with CBD capsules for sale, if you didn’t feel your desired effects after 45 minutes feel free to ingest another serving. If you’ve consumed about 3 servings and still don’t feel any depression relief, you may have to invest in a stronger strength.

As we mentioned before, everyone has a completely different body composition. It’s very possible for two people who weigh exactly the same to need different strengths. You might have to experiment a bit before finding your perfect CBD strength but don’t give up.

Your depression free life may be much more attainable than you think.
